When is variable importance estimation in species distribution modelling affected by spatial correlation?

چکیده

Species distribution models are generic empirical techniques that have a number of applications. One these applications is to determine which environmental conditions most important for species. The calculation this variable importance depends on assumptions, including the observations used estimate independent each other. Spatial autocorrelation, common feature factors confounds assumption. Besides, many species trained using explanatory variables different levels spatial autocorrelation. In study we quantified effects differences in autocorrelation and type responses gradients estimations models. We simulated data both predictors species, so were control true contribution every model could be estimated after fitting found inflated estimates, but only when response linear. This inflation effect was larger preferences coincided with dominant site. Additionally find unimodal yield systematically higher compared linear responses. conclude relative cause bias estimations. way, helps clarify systematic controlled approach how make proper inferences about

Missing in action: Species competition is a neglected predictor variable in species distribution modelling

The central role of species competition in shaping community structure in ecosystems is well appreciated amongst ecologists. However species competition is a consistently missing variable in Species Distribution Modelling (SDM). This study presents results of our attempt to incorporate species competition in SDMs. We used a suit of predictor variables including Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (S...

Species distribution modelling of invasive alien species; Pterois miles for current distribution and future suitable habitats

The present study aims to predict the potential geographic distribution and future expansion of invasive alien lionfish (Pterois miles) with ecological niche modelling along the Mediterranean Sea. The primary data consisted of occurrence points of P. miles in the Mediterranean and marine climatic data layers were collected from global databases. All the used models run 100% su...

Spatial analysis improves species distribution modelling during range expansion.

Species distribution models (SDMs) assume equilibrium between species' distribution and the environment. However, this assumption can be violated under restricted dispersal and spatially autocorrelated environmental conditions. Here we used a model to simulate species' ranges expansion under two non-equilibrium scenarios, evaluating the performance of SDM coupled with spatial eigenvector mappin...

Evaluation of species diversity and spatial distribution characteristics of five dominant plant species in Hamoon wetlands

This research aimed to investigate plant species diversity and spatial distribution of five dominant species i.e. Phragmites australis, Tamarix meyeri, Aeluropus littoralis, Aeluropus lagopoides and Cynodon dactylon in Hamoon international wetlands in 2015. To this end, a randomize-systematic sampling method was used according to w pattern by four strip transect at 5000 m2 at each station. The ...

When is correlation coevolution?

Studying the correlation between traits of interacting species has long been a popular approach for identifying putative cases of coevolution. More recently, such approaches have been used as a means to evaluate support for the geographic mosaic theory of coevolution. Here we examine the utility of these approaches, using mathematical and computational models to predict the correlation that evo...
